This comparison was checked against Apple’s Dictation guide, OpenAI’s current ChatGPT Voice guidance, and Relay’s current product and privacy information on September 1, 2026. Choose Mac Dictation when the cursor is already in the right place.
Apple Dictation is for entering text into the Mac app where you are working. It starts at the insertion point and is appropriate when you know the destination, want the words there, and do not need a conversation about them first.
This is the least complicated choice for a dictated email sentence, note, form, or search query. It does not ask you to move the work into a separate assistant conversation.

Choose ChatGPT Voice when the conversation is the work.
ChatGPT Voice is designed for spoken conversations with ChatGPT. OpenAI says Voice is available to logged-in users in the mobile apps and on ChatGPT.com, and that the transcript is added to the current text conversation after you exit.
Choose it when you want to ask, explore, or discuss a topic with ChatGPT. It is not the same workflow as dictating directly into the email, editor, or internal tool where the final work needs to live.

Choose Relay for macOS when input in the existing app is the work.
Relay for macOS is a current standalone software product for M-series Macs. It is designed as a voice-input interface in the applications where you can type, rather than as a general-purpose chatbot or a separate writing destination.
Choose it when you want to speak a developing thought, a revision, or an intention into the app where the work already lives. Relay Q is not required: it is separate future hardware scheduled to ship in January 2027.

Privacy decisions belong to the exact path you use.
Apple directs Mac users to Keyboard settings to see how general text Dictation inputs and transcripts are processed. ChatGPT Voice and Relay are separate products with their own account, data, and privacy information; do not carry an assumption from one tool into another.
Relay says it captures audio only while the assigned recording key is held. Its optional Mac context is locally reviewable, editable, and deletable; audio and context chosen for processing pass through Relay to model providers and are not retained by Relay. Read each current policy before speaking sensitive material.

The final recommendation is not one tool for every voice moment.
Use Apple Dictation for direct text entry, ChatGPT Voice for a spoken ChatGPT conversation, and Relay for macOS when you need a voice-input layer inside the Mac workflow itself. You can use more than one, because they answer different questions.
This is a workflow comparison, not a benchmark of AI quality, privacy guarantees, price, or availability. Those properties can change and should be verified on the linked current product pages.

Choose by where the next useful action happens.
Before opening any voice tool, name the next action. If it is placing words in a document, start at that cursor. If it is exploring a question with an assistant, start a conversation. If it is shaping input in the Mac app where the work already lives, evaluate a voice-input layer for that app.
This simple routing rule is more reliable than a feature checklist. It also makes it easier to use more than one tool without duplicating work or mistaking a conversation transcript for a finished draft.
